We begin with a comprehensive evaluation to find any factors that may being contributing to body imbalance, aches/pains or dysfunction. This will include assessment of bowel, bladder and sexual concerns.
Together, we develop a treatment plan to address body imbalance, aches and pains, and any bowel, bladder and sexual health concerns to help you thrive in pregnancy and have a smoother birth and postpartum recovery.
During pregnancy, this may also include learning proper breathing mechanics, proper push mechanics, perineal tear reduction and push positioning.
During postpartum, this may also include body mechanics during feeding and bending/lifting, baby wearing, vaginal and cesarean tissue healing, core coordination, return to pain-free intercourse, return to and thriving with exercise, and any other goals you may have.
-
From a physical therapy standpoint, birth prep is assisting your body in finding balance and giving you physical tools and information to improve labor, birth and postpartum outcomes. Goals include but are not limited to: reducing aches/pains for physical preparation, assisting baby to get into proper positioning, shortening length of labor, protecting your perineum, and reducing postpartum comorbidities such as leaking, prolapse, diastasis recti, tearing, etc.
Care beginning in pregnancy allows for easier access to early postpartum care to facilitate recovery.
-
Pre-conception, you don’t have to be already pregnant to be seen for care! SO MUCH can be done to prepare your body ahead of time.
During pregnancy, it is typically easiest to get started during the second trimester, but as soon as you as possible is ideal to decrease overwhelm. Care during pregnancy, often leads improved labor and postpartum outcomes. You can expect approximately 2-6 sessions depending on your needs and goals.
Postpartum, I suggest an appointment within the first 3 weeks (ideally in the first couple of days) with ongoing follow-ups at a pace that works best for you. It is never too late to get started. Typical recommendation for follow-ups is every 2-4 weeks and number of sessions depends on your needs and goals.

My functional class is all things actionable and hands-on. You may want to choose this class if you already have the knowledge base surrounding childbirth, but instead want to know what to DO before and during labor with confidence. This class is great for dads to feel like they are able to contribute to the process in a meaningful way.
-
My goal is to make sure you AND your support person feel actively prepared for birth and confident in the process! This class will have heavy emphasis on how to move through the process TOGETHER. This course will have special considerations for protecting the pelvic floor throughout. It will not include any information on interventions, decision making, or extensive postpartum considerations (outside of pelvic floor recovery). If you desire to learn this information, please consider taking the comprehensive childbirth education course which includes all of the information found in this functional course.
